Plant hunters and botanical drawing

29/06/2015   Jenni

Pupils from Sheringham Primary School had a unique chance to learn about the lives of the early plant hunters and to see drawings of the specimens they discovered on a visit to the John Innes Foundations rare books collection. The SAW Trust and the Young Norfolk Arts Festival worked with Sarah Wilmot from the John Innes Centre to host the workshop.  Sarah told the children all about the adventurous expeditions of the early plant hunters and took them into the rare books room so they could see some of the first recordings of plant species that we are familiar with today.  Then  Ex-Kew Gardens botanical artist and 'real plant hunter' Christine Grey - Wilson led a drawing workshop with the pupils based on the drawings within the books. This was a great combination of science, art and history.
